Project Summary
As part of a lift refurbishment project at the Salisbury Hospital CS supplied custom printed Acrovyn by Design panels, CS Acrovyn Textured Sheet and HRB20 Hand/Crashrails transforming the shabby lifts into an easy to clean and maintain showcase of the Hospital’s pioneering history.
Full Case Study
Salisbury District Hospital, which serves the nearby city of Salisbury in Wiltshire, has developed greatly over the years with many new specialist units and general wards being created or refurbished since its opening in 1891.
However, the patient lifts hadn’t changed since they were first installed and started showing their age, not fitting in with the high standard of care Salisbury Hospital is known for.
Design Goals
A programme of mechanical refurbishment of the 6 patient lifts, carried out by the hospital’s Estates Team, presented an opportunity to upgrade the lift interiors, creating a more welcoming environment for patients during their visits.
ArtCare, the arts in health service for Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, designed a scheme that turned the lifts into time capsules, documenting the hospital’s history and pioneering healthcare treatments. ArtCare wanted to use inspiring historical imagery and bright colours to provide a visually appealing display.
To ensure that the lifts could withstand constant daily use and stringent hospital cleaning regimes, the project required hardwearing and impact resistant finishes. CS Acrovyn provided the solution.
Results
Renowned for its durability and ease of cleaning, CS Acrovyn is designed for busy interiors experiencing high levels of wear and tear. The range includes a choice of options to match specific protection requirements and was perfect for refurbishing the lift interiors.
Each lift design, prepared by ArtCare, features different colours and a distinct theme – Nursing, Science and Innovation, Food, Children, Celebrations, and the History of Salisbury District Hospital.
Old photos from hospital archives were used in imaginative collages accompanied by text descriptions to identify development milestones in the six areas. The bespoke artwork was incorporated into CS Acrovyn by Design, a durable, wipe-clean wall covering which protects both the wall and the image from scuffs and abrasion.
In addition, 2mm Acrovyn Sheet in complementary colours was applied to the rest of the wall areas to provide a highly durable and easy to clean surface finish. The impact protection material is textured and through-coloured to hide bumps and scratches effectively.
Chosen Acrovyn Colours
Installed at mid-wall height, CS Acrovyn HRB20 Hand/Crash Rails offer patient support as well as protecting the walls from the costly damage caused by heavy hospital beds and trolleys.
Lifts used regularly by heavily loaded catering tugs were fitted with 200W50 rubber crashrails, to provide long lasting protection.
The tired, shabby lifts have now been transformed and will stay looking good for years to come, thanks to the easy to maintain quality of Acrovyn products. By using CS Acrovyn by Design, the lifts have the added benefit of making Salisbury Hospital’s history collection accessible to everyone, offering a welcome distraction for patients and staff.
The refurbishment project has been very well received by patients, staff and visitors, with one of them commenting:
“I have had a look at the lifts and they are ALL wonderful, it was a great idea. I am sure there will be others that would like to view [them] when they are next at the hospital. I find local History fascinating”.
