Located in East London, the ground breaking Beckton Waste to Energy Plant is the largest fat-fuelled power station in the world. The plant, developed and run by 2OC is set to produce 130 Gigawatt hours (GWh) a year of renewable electricity – enough to run 39,000 average-sized homes.
To allow the turbo-expander (a giant turbine that allows the recovery of thermal energy) to operate efficiently and safely, CS supplied and installed a range of bespoke ventilation and pressure relief systems.
4 bespoke turret assemblies were developed for the project, each housing 8 CS Explovent XRV-IC Roof Vents and 16 CS ALS-500 Acoustic Louvres. Each turret provides essential ventilation for the turbo-expander as well as added safety and security in the case of dangerous over pressures within the turbo-expander.
To allow quick and efficient installation the turret systems were manufactured to be fully water tight, alleviating the need to clad or flash any remaining vertical areas between the roof line and other associated junction detailing, lessening the responsibility held by the main contractor and roofing subcontractor.
CS also supplied 28 individual wall ERP-IC Explovent Pressure Relief Panels to further protect the structure and machinery from the dangerous build-up of pressure.
CS’ ability to engineer a bespoke product for the project combined with CS’ first class installation helped ensure Beckton CHiP was up and running on time and able to operate safely and efficiently supplying the surrounding areas with sustainable, renewable energy.
